Bourbon Biomedical Advanced Research Laboratories, Inc.,  was established as a subsidiary of Bourbon Corporation, which is engaged in the manufacture and sale of food and beverage products, mainly confectionery, to develop new business into the field of regenerative medicine. The parent company, Bourbon Corporation was founded in Kashiwazaki City, Niigata Prefecture, in 1924, in order to expand the confectionary production base in rural areas in response to the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923.

During that time, we have also been actively engaged in research on sugar due to its connection to our core product, confectionery. Most recently, we have been working with the Shinshu University School of Medicine for more than 10 years to study the various functions of sugar. Through such functional research, we discovered a sugar that inhibits the proliferation of cultured stem cells, such as induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and embryonic stem cells (ESCs), without killing the cells.

In the field of regenerative medicine, from early on, treatment methods to save many patients with intractable diseases have been studied by utilizing various stem cells, mainly iPSCs. In this field, where cell culture work is essential, the only kind of culture medium (that crucial item!) which is currently provided is the sort geared toward the maintenance of cell proliferation. Therefore, we developed “Xyltech™ Cell Proliferation Control System BOF-01,” a medium with cell proliferation suppression effect by utilizing the new function of the sugar mentioned above. Then, we started a new business to provide a medium to control the growth rate of cells in combination with conventional growth media.

We will make further contributions to the development of the regenerative medicine field, which contributes to the health of all people, by aiming for higher-level research and development while receiving various opinions and requests from you and utilizing them in our research and development.
